An Appeal from Tom Langley
Frequent readers of this newsletter are familiar with WEI-India under the leadership of Brother Prabhu Kumar. Students are taught the WEI courses year-round by the church of Christ preachers at the location where they worship. The thousands of WEI booklets needed for these schools are printed in India each spring to save money on printing and shipping.
Once a month, Brother Prabhu sends a report detailing the work done by the WEI teachers under his direction. These reports are full of stories of baptisms as a direct or indirect result of work done by scores of WEI teachers scattered all over central and southeast India.
Below are the 2019 statistics from the WEI schools and teachers.
- The total number of Indian teachers in 2019 who taught the Bible using WEI: 73
- The total number of students who studied with these teachers: 3,650
- The number of students who graduated from the Intermediate course: 2,230
- The number of locations where WEI schools were conducted in 2019: 92
- The total number of baptisms as a direct result of these WEI schools: 47
- The total number of baptisms from Brother Kumar’s comprehensive ministry: 96
I’ve personally visited the work there on three occasions and can attest that it is one of the most fruitful works being done in our brotherhood using WEI as a tool to teach the word of God. Brother Prabhu is a Bible scholar, a gospel preacher, and a gifted manager and organizer.
The WEI-India mission effort is currently under the interim oversight of the elders of the Maryville Church of Christ. Unfortunately, Maryville’s budget is insufficient to fully support the work. Therefore, we are again making an appeal to individuals and churches in order to raise the funds necessary to sustain this good work. We are also seeking a congregation of the Lord’s church to assume sponsorship of this work and thus provide a more substantial and long-term commitment.
For the year 2020, we are several thousand dollars short of the money needed to sustain this outreach ministry.
