Exciting Developments in Nigeria

October 6, 2022

It is breath-taking to watch God work through people who are sold out to Jesus.  A good example is found in the ministry of Aniefiok and Etang Akpan in Uruk Otong, Nigeria.

In 1996, Aniefiok bought a parcel of ground in Uruk Otong planning to establish a Christian mission there.  This land was the site of an ancient Juju shrine where Aniefiok’s great grandfather sold amulets and offered human sacrifices to the local gods.  Aniefiok’s great grandfather was the tribal chief who wore the title, “His Royal Majesty,” and who cast spells as a witch doctor.

The traditional rulers of Uruk Otong warned Aniefiok that if he intruded in their gods’ territory by establishing a Christian mission on sacred soil, he would suffer serious consequences.  In spite of this warning, Aniefiok did not give up his dream.

There were no buildings on the property, so Aniefiok rented a large circus-style tent and established Rhema Academy with K through 12 grades.  Aniefiok used WEI materials for teaching English and the Bible to the older students, and God gave “the increase.”  Then, the government shut down the school saying that the facilities were inadequate.

Since that time, Aniefiok and Etang have faced terrible difficulties.  Aniefiok said, “Everyone in my village believes that Satan’s incessant attacks on me and my mission are direct consequences of my decision to build the church at the site of the ancestral shrine.  A chief in my village tried to kill me so people would believe that the gods of the land had killed me for invading their territory.”  In the end the Chief died of mysterious causes, and Aniefiok survived to serve the Lord.  God proved his power over Satanic forces. By the grace of God and the sacrificial giving of Christians in the U.S., a building was erected in 2015-16 for Rhema Christin Academy and the Campus Church of Christ.

In 2016, Aniefiok established a training school called World English Institute & School of Ministry [WEISOM], as an evangelism ministry of the campus church in Uruk Otong. After a year of English and Bible studies and ministry training, he inaugurated an evangelism team and started using WEISOM students in house-to-house evangelism.  Aniefiok says, “Now the gospel is spreading like wildfire across our community.”

WEISOM-Trained Evangelism Team in Front of RCA

Even after the new building was erected, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education would not allow Aniefiok to include a high school in RCA due to inadequate classroom space, library, and ICT center. Permission to operate a high school would not be granted until after a new building was added to the campus.

In 2016, the foundation was poured and construction was begun on a RCA High School building which will have a room large enough to accommodate the growing Campus Church of Christ that has run out of space.  Unfortunately, the new building has not been completed due to a lack of funds.

If God has blessed you financially, and you would like to lay up treasures in heaven, this is one sure way to lead thousands of lost people to Christ.

Providentially, a faithful member of the Church of Christ and a longtime friend of Aniefiok is now the new Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and he has authorized Aniefiok to reactivate the RCA High School on a temporary basis, contingent on the completion of the new building.  The unfinished building can be seen in the background of the following picture.

Thanks to the generosity of Lee Allen and Lola Crouch, Aniefiok has been able to purchase twenty-one used computers for the new ICT Center that has been set up in the current RCA building.

More than 100 students have enrolled in the newly activated RCA High School and will soon be studying English and the Bible with American Internet teachers

God has blessed Aniefiok and Etang with great vision and uncommon ability to organize evangelistic efforts.  Rhema Christian Academy and the booming campus church are prime examples.

When RCA high school students study WEI materials for four years, most of them become Christians before they graduate. Finishing the multi-purpose building will not only keep the high school alive to produce fruit; it will also provide space for the rapidly-growing campus church.
